Viability study on Multi-Purpose Vehicles

Vanguard and Enspired led a feasibility study for a major rail infrastructure operator to convert their MPV vehicles to be powered by battery/hydrogen. The work included:

Route modelling and simulations to understand the duty cycle requirements and proved that for the range and loading, batteries alone would not provide sufficient power. This allowed the team to specify the size of the battery and fuel cell that would give the optimum power architecture and still meet the operator's longest duty cycles.
Market study for the major components and identifying which products were likely to be suitable and typical costs for these.
Development of a concept architecture by reviewing existing drawings and documentation, and comparing this with the major components that would be available from the supply chain.
Site survey to confirm the physical space constraints, electrical and control interfaces and to understand how the transmission, power and control systems would function.
Preparing a 3D CAD model of the concept design.
Preparing indicative costings and timescales for a conversion project.
Writing up findings in a feasibility study report.
The scope of this feasibility study would be very similar to the early investigative work needed for the target vehicle conversion.

Viability study on Multi-Purpose Vehicles

Enspired is currently working for a major cross-channel rail operator to develop a technical specification for new rail crane equipment. The current scope is to support the development of the technical specification, respond to supplier enquiries and help the client team move towards contract award. To date Enspired has successfully delivered a final draft version of the technical specification, set out a safety management and approvals strategy, produced a risk register for the project delivery and supported several meetings with the preferred supplier. Once the project has been approved by the investment committee, Enspired is expecting to provide project management and project engineering support to the delivery phase of this project.

Hydrogen conversion of a freight locomotive – feasibility and concept design

In 2024 and early 2025, Vanguard and Enspired delivered a feasibility study and concept design for the hydrogen conversion of an electric freight locomotive operating in southeast Europe. Our feasibility scope involved the initial assessment of viability, route modelling and simulation work to size the battery and hydrogen fuel cell equipment required for the proposed scope of operations, and a market survey of suitable battery and hydrogen equipment suppliers. We then worked with our partners in Croatia to develop a concept design showing the physical, electrical and control interfaces to the existing equipment, analysed the power demand and created a concept 3D CAD model, electrical schematic, power loading calculations and control system architecture. As part of this work, we also led HAZID sessions using the CSM risk assessment methodology and developed a project plan for the delivery of the detailed design and conversion of the locomotive.
